At least thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
