The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
