The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
